English as a Second Language

UW-Madison offers instruction in English as a second language (ESL) for adults interested in improving their proficiency and for students seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees.

The Intensive English Program at UW-Madison
Our program provides quality instruction to adults who wish to improve their proficiency in English. We offer full-time 15-week programs in the Fall and Spring semesters and an 8-week Summer program. Our classes begin at the intermediate level. Please note that we do not offer beginning-level instruction.

ESL for International Degree Students
Any non-native English speaker admitted to the university may take ESL courses. Most new and transfer undergraduate students must take the ESL Assessment Test (ESLAT) and enroll in the recommended ESL courses until they have completed English 118. English 118 fulfills the Communication A Requirement for undergraduates.

Continuing Studies English Language Program
Non-credit courses in ESL for adult learners who want to know and use English better. Courses vary in length and cost.
